When your home begins to feel like the builders forgot something, it's time to think about nice trim and crown moldings! If you are not familiar with the terminology, you owe it to yourself to learn. Crown Molding is three dimensional trim which delineates the juncture of walls and ceiling. Nothing sets off the décor of a well finished room like tasteful use of Crown Molding.

Such moldings are available in sizes and styles to please every taste. You can find them as small as 1", as large as 8", and every imaginable size between those extremes. There are very plain and simple designs, and a full range of styles up to the highly ornate. If you want the ultimate crown molding, you can even invent your own! A few choosey homeowners have devised extravagant styles by installing two or more types of molding in combination.

If you have never installed crown molding, though, you probably should start simply. It looks so easy, and the results are so pleasing --- but your first attempt is likely to be a bit less than "just right!" Better yet, if you have never done it, you would probably be wise to find a skilled Crown Molding Installer --- at least for those areas of the home which are most visible.

You say that you can "do it yourself"? OK, then you should start simply. Choose a small room for your first experiment, such as a bathroom or closet. Yes, I understand that bathrooms and especially closets don't particularly NEED crown molding, but remember: this is a learning experience. If your first attempt at installing crown molding is made in the family's "great room", or in some other highly visible location, you had better work VERY CAREFULLY. DO NOT HURRY! In case you are planning a party this weekend, and really want the room to be perfect, be warned: Do It Yourself Crown Molding is probably NOT your best choice!

Most crown molding is made in such a way that it only touches the wall and ceiling on a rather narrow band at each edge. There is a substantial "empty space" behind the molding. It is critical that you be careful in placing it, or it will be crooked, and "wavy" looking. Although that look might be truly memorable, it's probably NOT what you want folks to remember!

Even before you install the first "stick", you should trim the ends. Properly installed Crown Molding rarely has square ends. Corners are especially tricky, as you need to cut an angle on each of the mating pieces. (This process is referred to as "mitering" or "coping.") When the mitered ends meet, they should blend perfectly. No, not "gaps less than 1/8" --- although even THAT may be difficult for a first timer. To look good, gaps should be INVISIBLE.
